With an estimated 2.5 million Ethiopian children suffering from treatable disabilities and the ambitious dream to see every one of these freed from their disabling condition, CURE Ethiopia has a big task ahead of them. Frankly, it’s a dream that’s not achievable alone. CURE relies heavily on continued investment and support by not only individual donors but also through grants and generous government giving.
CURE Ethiopia recently concluded a commodities project through a U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) grant providing much-needed equipment to expand our surgical, anesthesia, and nursing training to national and regional medical professionals and to enhance our current surgical treatment of vulnerable children.
Specifically, USAID/ASHA-funded upgrades in CURE Ethiopia’s operating room equipment allow it to further solidify its status as a center for excellence in the treatment of children with disabilities in Ethiopia and the surrounding countries. The life-changing surgeries offered with this equipment will not only transform the lives of children by empowering them through increased mobility and functionality, but they will also help restore respect and dignity to these children and to their entire families. Furthermore, by treating and correcting disabilities, many of these children will have access to education, sometimes for the first time in their life, and can more easily work towards a life of self-sufficiency.
CURE Ethiopia is proud to serve as a training center of excellence and a model of best practices. In equipping the CURE Ethiopia training center, USAID/ASHA has contributed to strengthening the next generation of Ethiopian medical professionals. CURE Ethiopia is a teaching hospital, investing heavily in developing the future orthopedic surgeons of Ethiopia who, in turn, will invest in and help transform the lives of many Ethiopian children. At any one time, CURE Ethiopia hosts two orthopedic surgical residents and one pediatric orthopedic fellow. The additions to the training center allow CURE Ethiopia to continue teaching, as well as hosting various medical workshops and seminars for the medical community at large.

About the CURE Children’s Hospital of Ethiopia
Established in 2008, CURE Ethiopia performs over 2,500 life-changing reconstructive and orthopedic surgeries every year for children suffering from treatable disabilities. Strategically located in the capital city of Addis Ababa, the teaching hospital has 70 beds and four operating rooms. CURE International uses this facility to multiply its efforts by partnering with The College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa (COSECSA) to serve as a regional learning institution by implementing an orthopedic pediatric training program at the residency and fellowship levels. In addition to world-class clinical service, CURE Ethiopia ministers to the emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their communities.
